To provide a sliding bearing for base isolation having base-isolation performance almost as good as that of sliding bearings for base isolation with pieces of laminated rubber arranged in series, and capable of being manufactured at much lower cost than those kinds of sliding bearings, with its height kept low.
The sliding bearing 10 for base isolation has a first assembly 16 and a second assembly 18 which are coupled respectively to the lower structure 12 and the upper structure 14 of a structure, with a horizontal sliding surface 20 of the first assembly 16 making sliding contact with a horizontal sliding surface 22 of the second assembly 18. A rubber sheet 48 interposed between the horizontal sliding surface 22 of the second assembly 18 and the upper structure 14 of the structure undergoes elastic shear deformation horizontally, reducing the transmission of vibration from the lower structure 12 to the upper structure 14. By appropriately determining the thickness of the rubber sheet 18, the magnitude of the initial rigidity of the sliding bearing 10 can be adjusted. The elastic deformation of the rubber sheet 48 prevents local contact between the sliding surfaces 20, 22.
