To provide a maintenance-free sliding member and an inexpensive manufacturing method thereof.
In this sliding member, air holes of hard material having communicating air holes with porosity of 1 to 40%, which is mainly composed of one or more kinds selected from carbides, nitrides or carbonic nitrides of 4a, 5a, 6a-group element metals, stainless steel, high speed steel and die steel are filled with In or an alloy containing 30 atom % In. Thus, this sliding member can be used as an alloy or ceramic member causing sliding in use, including sliding members such as a mechanical seal, a sleeve, and a bearing. Further, this member can be utilized for a sliding member favorably used in environments where an organic lubricant is not suitable such as a vacuum environment and a high-temperature environment over a long period of time.
