PURPOSE: To make it possible to perform accurate measurement, by detecting the amount of relative movement of a slime detecting plate and a penetrating rod without contact, and measuring a thickness of the slime layer, which is deposited in the vicinity of the bottom of an excavated ditch.
CONSTITUTION: A piece of cable 9 is held and suspended in an excavated ditch. Then a stopper 6 is contacted with a disk 7 and stopped at a position where the lower end of a penetrating rod 1 agrees with the lower end of a slime detecting plate 2. Under this state, the scale of a measuring device 10 is set to zero. Thereafter, the device is further lowered into the ditch. When the slime detecting plate 2 reaches a slime layer A, whose specific gravity is equal to the specific gravity of the plate 2, the slime detecting plate 2 is stopped and only the penetrating rod 1, which has the specific gravity larger than that of the slime layer A, is lowered to a ditch bottom B. The amount of descent is measured by a measuring device 10 based on the output of a magnetic sensor 4.
