To provide a solid golf ball which has the trajectory and spin performance suitable for a player of a low head speed and a good spin characteristic and is excellent in controllability of an approach shot by forming the golf ball in such a manner that the hardness of a cover and the weight of the ball are within prescribed ranges.
The Shore D hardness of the cover of the solid golf ball formed by covering a solid core with the cover is in the range of 40 to 53° and the weight of the ball is in the range of 41 to 44.5g. If, in such a case, the Shore D hardness is smaller than 40°, the cover is so soft that an initial speed is not attained, resultingly, a sufficient carry is not obtainable. If, on the other hand, the Shore D hardness exceeds 53°, the durability and spin performance are poor and the controllability at the time of the approach shot is inferior. If the weight of the ball is lighter than 41g, the ball rises so high that the ball is liable to be affected by wind. The inertia moment of the ball is small and the sufficient carry is not obtainable. If, on the other hand, the weight exceeds 44.5g, there is not much difference from before and the good performance is not obtainable in the impact at a low head speed.
