PURPOSE: To revise a picture element number or the sensitivity optionally depending on the operating mode by adding signal charges of adjacent vertical transfer channels so as to enhance the sensitivity.

CONSTITUTION: A signal charge transferred in the lump from a photodiode to a vertical transfer channel is sequentially transferred toward a horizontal transfer channel 1 by 4-phase transfer voltages V3 and V4 fed to a vertical transfer electrode 21. When the transfer voltage V3 is applied to the vertical transfer electrode 21a, a signal charge Q on one vertical transfer channel 2a is led to a signal charge transfer section 61 while being guided by a phase shift voltage T. Moreover, when a transfer voltage V4 is fed to a vertical transfer electrode 21b, the signal charge Q on the channel 2b is transferred to the transfer section 61 while being guided by the voltage T and added to the charge Q. Then the charge of the adjacent channel is added to the original charge Q, and the sensitivity is enhanced by controlling the transmission section 61, the deterioration in the resolution is prevented and number of picture elements is optionally revised.
