To provide a spark ignition type internal combustion engine with a subsidiary chamber, supplying a gas mixture having an air-fuel ratio suitable to this engine running condition over a wide engine running region, and having a small hydrocarbon discharge and high efficiency.
In an internal combustion engine 1 equipped with a subsidiary chamber communicated with a main combustion chamber 16, a gas mixture injecting means 18 for directly a gas mixture intermittently to the subsidiary chamber, and an igniting means provided in the subsidiary chamber; the subsidiary chamber 17 is decentered to a side part from the injection direction extended line of the injecting means 18 to be communicated with the combustion chamber 16, and the injecting means 18 consist of an accumulator 19 adjoining to the subsidiary chamber 17 and filled with pressure air, an opening/closing valve 32 for opening/closing freely communicating the accumulator 19 and the subsidiary chamber 17, and a fuel injection valve 21 for injecting fuel into the accumulator 19.
