PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for sleeving a spreading unit container, the method being configured to spread open flattened tubular foil material to form a sleeve, to bring the sleeve into a target tubular shape and to discharge the sleeve toward the container.SOLUTION: The invention relates to a spreading unit for a container sleeving device, configured to spread open flattened tubular foil material to form a sleeve, to bring the sleeve into a target tubular shape and to discharge the sleeve toward the container, the spreading unit comprising a mandrel. The mandrel comprises an upstream mandrel element, an intermediate mandrel element, and a downstream mandrel element having a non-constant cross-section in an axial direction.
