Abstract:

To provide a start control device for an internal combustion engine capable of suitably performing starting of the internal combustion engine by compression ignition combustion and enlarging an execution area of the compression ignition combustion.

In the start control device for the internal combustion engine 3, when starting of the internal combustion engine 3 is required, it is determined whether or not HCCI air amount at starting required for the compression ignition combustion (HCCI combustion) is present in a cylinder C (steps 71-74 in Fig.13 and Fig.14). When it is determined that the HCCI air amount at starting is present in the cylinder C, in an exhaust stroke after starting requirement, a valve-closing timing of an exhaust valve 7 is quickened, air present in the cylinder C is compressed, a fuel is injected from an in-cylinder fuel injection valve 19 into the cylinder C, and exhaust stroke combustion is executed using a part of the compressed air by generating sparks from an ignition plug 17. Further, the internal combustion engine 3 is started by executing the compression ignition combustion immediately after that (steps 83, 84 in Fig.15 and Fig.18).
