To alleviate axial pressing force applied on an idle gear at the time of engagement with a ring gear and improve durability of a starter motor.
In this starter motor with the idle gear 15, a shock absorbing mechanism 7 is interposed between the idle gear 15 and a pinion gear 14. The shock absorbing mechanism 7 has a Belleville spring 97, an idle washer 98, a slip plate 99 and a C ring 100. The slip plate 99 is arranged relatively movably with respect to the idle gear 15, and the outer peripheral part of the slip plate 99 contacts a flange part 95 of the pinion gear 14. When the idle gear 15 is not smoothly engaged with the ring gear 16 and axial force is applied to the idle gear 15, the slip plate 99 is pressed by the pinion gear 14, is moved to the axial direction and presses the Belleville spring 97 via the idle washer 98. When the Belleville spring 97 is deformed, its elastic force absorbs the axial force applied to the idle gear 15.
