PURPOSE: To eliminate the gap azimuth loss generated at the time of reproducing by forming the width between conductor layers wider than a recording gap and flattening the recording gap.
CONSTITUTION: A pair of the conductor layers 13 for leading out currents are joined at both ends of an MR element 12 which is changed in the resistance value in accordance with to the intensity of the magnetic field on a recording medium and a signal detecting region 17 for reproducing is formed between the conductor layers 13. Further, an insulating layer 16b and shielding members 14, 15 are interposed in the upper part of the MR element 12, by which magnetic poles 14, 18 facing each other are formed to include the magnetic field generating part for recording. A recording gap 21a is formed between these magnetic poles 14 and 18. The width DMR2 at the end between the conductor layers 13 in the longitudinal direction of the MR element 12 is formed wider than the width DMR1 of a signal detecting region 17 and is formed wider than the width DW of the recording gap 21 in a longitudinal direction. A spacer is embedded in the recessed part formed between the conductor layers 13 and 13 in an upper shielding member 14, etc., by which the magnetic gap 21a is flattened and the gap azimuth loss generated at the time of reproducing is eliminated.
