Abstract:
To provide a significantly strong and rigid compression wood structure.SOLUTION: A significantly strong and rigid compression wood structure is formed by chemically treating cellulose-based natural wood so as to partially remove lignin. The treated wood holds lumina of the natural wood in which cellulose nanofibers of cell walls are aligned. Then, the treated wood is pressed in a direction intersecting with the direction of extension of the lumina so that the lumina are collapsed and residual fluid in the wood is removed. As a result, the strength and rigidity of the wood, among other mechanical properties, are improved as the cell walls are intertwined and hydrogen bonds are formed between adjacent cellulose nanofibers. By further modifying, manipulating or machining the compression wood, it can be adapted for various applications.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
