To provide a surface-coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer exhibiting superior resistance to defect in heavy cutting.
On the surface of a cutting tool base body comprising cemented carbide, cermet and a cubic boron-nitride-based very-high-pressure sintered body, a hard coating layer is formed which comprises a nitride layer of Ti and Si satisfying a composition formula of (Ti1-XSiX)N (where X is 0.01-0.3 in atomic ratio), has such crystal grains in an area ratio of 50% or more as to have a crystal orientation of 100 within a range of 0-15 degrees from the normal direction of a surface grinding surface when the layer is subject to crystal orientation analysis by EBSD, and exhibits such a crystalline orientation that a ratio of small angle boundaries (015) is 50% or more when an angle formed by adjacent crystal grains is measured.
