To provide a surface-coated cutting tool having a coat film containing both VN characteristics and TiAlN characteristics, and excellent in wear resistance in particular.
The surface-coated cutting tool includes a base material and the coat film formed on the base material. The coat film comprises two or more A layers made of VN and two or more B layers made of Ti1-xAlxN (wherein x refers to 0.3x0.7), which are alternately laminated, respectively. The thickness a of the A layer and the thickness b of the B layer are 2 to 1,000 nm, respectively. The thickness ratio a/b of the A layer to the B layer increases from the base material toward the top surface of the coat film. In addition, the thickness ratio a/b of the A layer to the B layer nearest to the base material is 0.1 to 0.7, and the thickness ratio a/b nearest to the top surface is 1.5 to 10.
