PURPOSE: To produce a surface coated steel product having high oxidation resistance by forming a nitride layer, etc., on the surface of a base material composed of steel type metal and further forming a coating layer of carbide, etc., composed of Ti, etc., and Al on the above layer by an ion plating method.

CONSTITUTION: A surface hardened layer consisting of nitride layer, carbide layer, and/or carbonitride layer is formed on the surface of a base material composed of steel type metal, such as structural steel. As the method for forming this layer, a surface hardening method, that is, any of a method using molten salt, a method using gas, and a method using ion can be used. Subsequently, a coating layer consisting of carbide, nitride, and/or carbonitride composed of one element among Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, and Ta and Al is formed on the above surface hardened layer. It is preferable to regulate the amount of Al in this hard film to about 10-40mole% of the total metallic components. Any of known ion plating sustems can be adopted for forming this hard film. It is preferable to regulate the thickness of the resulting hard film to about 0.1-10μm, and, usually, a thickness of about 1-5μm suffices. By this method, the oxidation resistance of the hard film can be improved, and the surface coated steel product having fastness and durability can be obtained.
