PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-modified nanodiamond which is excellent in heat resistance and is excellent in dispersibility and affinity for an organic material even in a high temperature environment of 250°C or higher.SOLUTION: The surface-modified nanodiamond of the present invention contains nanodiamond particles and a phosphonic acid ion or a phosphonic acid residue surface-modifying the nanodiamond particles. The phosphonic acid ion is represented, for example, by formula (1). The phosphonic acid residue is represented, for example, by formula (2).SELECTED DRAWING: None
