Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To significantly improve durability of a tool by compacting a powder of a hard material essentially comprising WC, calcining the compacted, dipping the body in an alkoxide containing Ti, sintering the calcined body coated with the alkoxide in a nitrogen gas atmosphere to precipitate Ti carbide particles, Ti nitride particles or Ti carbide nitride particles on the surface of the body.
SOLUTION: A hard material powder essentially comprising WC powder and containing TiC powder and TaC powder, etc., is compacted to obtain a compact body, which is calcined at specified temp. in vacuum. Then the calcined body is repeatedly dipped in Ti alkoxide such as tetraisopropoxy Ti, or a mixture alkoxide of Ti alkoxide and La alkoxide. The calcined body coated with the Ti alkoxide is sintered at 1,380 to 1,500°C in a nitrogen gas atmosphere for about one hour to precipitate Ti carbide particles, Ti nitride particles or Ti carbide nitride particles on the surface. Thus, a sintered body having a particle layer of ≥5μm effective thickness is obtd.
