To provide a synchromesh type automatic transmission capable of shortening time taken for gear change at a lock occurrence time and shortening free running time of a vehicle.
The automatic transmission has a shift-select actuator 5 for moving a shift fork 25a of a combining mechanism 25 for selectively combining one set of a plurality of sets of transmission gears 17, 18, and 19 and an output shaft 16 in a first moving direction or a second moving direction. When the shift-select actuator 5 moves the shift fork 25a to any gear stage, from the neutral position to the other gear stage, or to the neutral position, the control unit 4 divides the moving route of the shift fork to a predetermined zones for each of the first moving direction and the second moving direction, and a elapsed time is compared with a set time every zone. When the movement does not finish by the set time, the shift fork 25a is returned to the initial position of the zone and then moved is to the finishing position of the zone again.
