PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for favorably detecting a shape of a target from an image with unfavorable contrast between luminance values of picture elements composing a background and a target and rapidly detecting the target in the image.
SOLUTION: An average value of luminance values of all picture elements of an input original image is calculated, and an existence of a target candidate constituent picture element is determined concerning a luminance value of a picture element by using the original image and the average value. If there is an existing area of a target candidate, target candidate existing area data are outputted by enlarging a target candidate existing area to its periphery, target candidate picture elements in the target candidate existing area are detected, binarization images are generated, the generated binarization images are labeled, each target candidate is recognized, a center of gravity of the labeled target candidates is calculated, target determination areas with the center of gravity in the centers are set to all recognized target candidates, a target candidate statistic and a background statistic in each target determination area is calculated, the target is determined, and the target is detected from the input image.
