PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound capable of increasing the tilt angle while maintaining the antiferroelectricity simply by adding a small amount thereof to a host liquid crystal capable of manifesting the smectic C phase.
CONSTITUTION: This compound of the formula R1-X-A1-Y-A2-Z-R2 {R1 is a 1-20C alkyl and the group CH2 forming the alkyl is substituted with SiR2-(O- SiR2)n [R is an alkyl or an aryl; (n) is ≥0]; X and Z are each CO, O, etc.; A1 and A2 are each biphenyl, formula I, etc., with the proviso that at least either of A1 and A2 is formula I, etc.; Y is CH2O, O, etc.; R2 is a 4-20C optically active group having asymmetric C}, e.g. (R)-1, 1, 1-trifluoro-2-octyl 6-[4'(4, 4- dimethyl-4-silaoctyloxy)-4-biphenylcarbonyloxy]-1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydro-2- naphthalenecarboxylate. The compound is obtained by reacting, e.g. a compound of formula III prepared from a compound of formula II with a compound of formula IV.
