To provide a method for efficiently and readily producing a thermally expandable microcapsule and hardly causing the remaining of an inorganic material and a metal component on the surface or in the interior of the particle.
The method for producing the thermally expandable microcapsule uses a cellulose ether providing 0.2 wt.% aqueous solution having 48×10-5-60×10-5 N/cm surface tension and 2 wt.% aqueous solution having 2-5,000 mPa s viscosity at 23°C as a suspension disperser when producing the thermally expandable microcapsule by subjecting an aqueous suspension containing a monomer component comprising at least one kind of radically polymerizable vinylic monomer and a polyfunctional monomer, a volatile expanding agent to be formed into a gas shape at a temperature not higher than the softening point of the polymer obtained from the monomer component, and the suspension disperser to a suspension polymerization.
