Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for making a correct decision whether the number of pages of a collective matter arranged on a book making line is acceptable or not.
SOLUTION: A thickness measuring unit 40 disposed along a page arranging conveyor 14 conveying an arranged collective material 20 comprises a movable wheel 60 having outer circumferential surface to be engaged with the collective material when it moves toward the arranged collective material. The outer circumferential surface includes a part 83 for reflecting an incident light 37. A reflected light 38 has characteristics variable as a function of the thickness of page arranged collective material under measurement. A photosensor 39 detects a light reflected from the light reflecting part on the outer circumferential surface of movable wheel. A control unit 44 functions in conjunction with the photosensor to produce a signal 42 variable as a function of the characteristics of reflected light and thereby the thickness of page arranged collective material.
