To obtain a new compound having a sulfur atom bonded to a benzimidazole ring, having a wide fungicidal spectrum, and exhibiting prominent effects no only on drug-sensitive fungi but also on drug-resistant fungi.
This new compound is the one of formula I [R1 is H, a (substituted) 1-4C alkyl or the like; R2 and R3 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl; X is a halogen, a (substituted) 1-4C alkyl or the like; Y is a halogen, a (substituted) 1-4C alkyl, a 1-4C alkylsulfenyl or the like; (m) is 0-4; and (n) is 0-5], e.g. 2-(benzimidazol-2-yl)thio-5'-chloro-2'-methylacetanilide. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II (e.g. 1-methyl-2-thio-5- trifluoromethylbenzimidazole) with a compound of formula III (e.g. 2-chloro-2'- fluoroacetanilide) in the presence of a solvent (e.g. hexane) and a base (e.g. sodium carbonate).
