Abstract:

To provide a porous group 4 metal oxide which is useful as a catalyst having excellent thermal stability, a large specific surface area, controlled and sharp pore diameter distribution, and outstanding reaction selectivity, and containing highly dispersed catalyst metal or as a catalyst carrier.

The porous titania is obtained by adding, as a grain growth suppressing agent for suppressing the grain growth at the time of firing, an oxyanion and/or metal carbonyl anion containing a metal selected from P, S, Mo, W, V, B, Al and Si or a metal cation selected from Fe, Ni, Co, Mg, Mn, Pt, Pd, Rh and Ru to hydrosol or hydrogel or a dried material of them of hydrous titanium hydroxide expressed by general formula: MO2-nH2O (wherein, M represents titanium (Ti) being a group 4 metal, and n is ≥0.02), and then drying and firing the resulting mixture. The porous titania has a specific surface area of ≥80 m2/g when it is fired under the condition of 500°C for 3 h.
