PURPOSE: To enable a catalyst to expose enoughly and to prevent peeling-off of a catalyst layer, by forming a catalyst at one surface of a solid electrolytic substrate through the medium of an adhesive agent layer.
CONSTITUTION: An electrode layer 2' is formed in a given position on a surface of a solid electrolytic substrate 1'. A given part, containing the electrode layer 2", of the substrate 1' is covered to form an inorganic adhesive agent layer 3', and a catalyst layer 4' is securely adhered thereon. The adhesive agent for the adhesive agent layer 3' needs that, when coating, it has adhesion, it is of a porous structure having a gas transmissivity resulting from drying or burning, it has no catalyst poison, and it has a high adhesion to the substrate 1'. A component comprising mainly either aluminum or sodium silicate can be listed as a component to satisfy said requirements. The gas detecting element so constituted is formed such that the active surface of the catalyst is enoughly exposed to a gaseous matter to be detected to be high in detecting sensitivity, and besides, the catalyst layer is firmly adhered, whereby it is also high in mechanical strength.
