PURPOSE: To obtain a method of accurately discriminating the size of skewness in a multi-track magnetic tape device by calculating skewness value between tracks with a count indicating an identification value and a distance between tracks.
CONSTITUTION: A signal is produced by discriminating a point of time at which all tracks are in an acquisition burst area 310 following the inter-block gap(IBG) area 315 of a magnetic tape. For the purpose of detecting a forward synchronous character 1 (FSC1) 320, a track identification value between the first and the last track is stored, as well a count value indicating a distance between the first and the last track. Then, skewness value between the tracks is calculated by dividing the count value by the difference of the track identification value between the first and the last track. Using this method, the size of the skewness can be accurately measured between the end tracks, enabling the influence of the skewness to be minimized based on the measurement.
