PURPOSE: To prevent the deflection of backup rolls by supporting the barrel parts of the rolls with cradles and forming lubricating medium films on the inside surfaces of the cradles.
CONSTITUTION: Work rolls 1 of multiplex type rolling mills are driven by a unit 3, and backup rolls 2 are supported in the prescribed outside circumferential range over the entire length of the barrel parts by cradles 4. Since the cradles 4 are supported by screw-down devices 5, the need for the journal parts of the rolls 2 is eliminated. Each cradle body 41 has a recess 411 and bearing metals 412, 413 of soft metals are mounted respectively on the inside circumferential surface and both end faces thereof. Part of the roll 2 is contained in the space formed by these inside surfaces and a lubricating medium is supplied through a joint 42 then through the passages 414 and grooves 415 in the body 41 to the inside surface of the metal 412, and the film othereof is formed between the same and the roll 2. In order to prevent the leakage of the lubricating medium, sealing members 43, 44 are mounted to the edges at the bottom ends of the metals 412, 413.
