PURPOSE: To prepare a coal/water slurry having a low viscosity and a consistently high concn. with reduced power consumption for crushing, by adding water to crushed coal and feeding it into a wet tube mill filled with balls having a specified particle size, for grinding.
CONSTITUTION: Crushed coal is fed, while water is being added to it, into a wet tube mill filled with balls having a diameter larger by 1.5W7.5 times than the maximum diameter of crushed coal. The method increases velocity constant in pulverization of crushed coal and makes it possible to produce a coal/water slurry contg. particles of 1μ or smaller in diameter in an amt. of at least 10% even when it has a high concn. and not contg. particles of 0.5mm or larger in diameter which are causative of unstable slurry. The crushed coal should pref. have a maximum diameter of less than 20μ, esp. less than 10μ.
