PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a liquid crystal composition used in a liquid crystal display element.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula 1 (R1 is 1-18C alkyl or alkenyl; A is formula 7 to 11; NAP is 2,6-naphthylene; R2 is 1-18C alkyl). The compound of formula 1 in which A is formula 7 is obtained by reacting a compound of formula 5 derived from 6-bromo-2-naphthol with a compound of formula 6 in the presence of a Pd catalyst. When this compound is used as a component of a chiral smectic C phase liquid crystal composition, a liquid crystal composition good in orienting properties without zigzag defects can be obtained and a liquid crystal display element having a high contrast ratio can be obtained. Since other smectic phases are not exhibited in a low-temperature region, this compound can be used as a component of the chiral smectic C phase liquid crystal composition to extend the temperature range of the chiral smectic C phase.
