PURPOSE: To obtain an ethylene (co)polymer having a wide MW distribution and excellent moldability and providing moldings, such as films, excellent in strength, etc., by effecting the (co)polymerization of ethylene in two stages in the presence of a specified catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst is prepared by combining a catalyst component, prepared by contacting a magnesium alkoxide wth a halohydrocarbon and a titanium compound, with an organoalluminum compound. Then, ethylene is polymerized or copolymerized with an α-olefin in two stages. An ethylene polymer of a melt index <0.5g/10min is obtained by producing 40W60wt%, based on the total weight of the polymer formed, (co)polymer of a melt index of 0.001W 0.1g/10min in the first stage, and then producing 60W40wt% of (co)polymer of a melt index of 100W2,000g/10min in the second stage.
