PURPOSE: To store a hatch cover in a compact form within a ship's hull, by a method wherein a hatch cover for a hatch formed in a main deck is split into a plurality of cover members, central cover members are placed on rotatable end cover members, the resultant stacks are rotated, the other cover members are placed on a cover member provided with a truck, and they are moved on rails.
CONSTITUTION: The hatch cover 9 for the hatch formed in the intermediate deck partitioning the interior of a ship's hold 2 formed in the ship's hull 1 is split into a plurality of cover members AWM in the longitudinal direction. Central cover members E, F are placed on the rotatable end cover members A, M, and the resultant stacks are rotated. One D of the cover members located between the central cover members E, F and the rotatable end cover members A, M is provided with a truck part 15, the remaining cover members B, C, GW K are stacked on the cover member D provided with the truck part 15, and the thus stacked cover members are conveyed on the rails and are stored into predetermined positions. Accordingly, even in the case of a freight vessle wherein sufficient deck height can not be obtained, such as a container ship, the hatch cover can be stored in a compact form within the ship's hull.
