PURPOSE: To discriminate defective information with short block length by adding a header mark to defective loop information to be stored in a bootstrap loop, and giving prescribed relation between the number of bytes of the header mark and the allowable number of defective minor loops.
CONSTITUTION: In a bootstrap loop 6 which allows serail writing and reading, defective loop information is stored. A header mark is added to the defective loop information, and N<n/m, where N is the number of bytes of the header mark, (n) is the allowable number of defective minor loop of a magnetic bubble memory, and (m) is the number of "0"s in one byte. Consequently, the defective information is discriminated with short block length and in one bootstrap loop, plural pieces of defective loop information are stored, so access to the defective loop information is speeded up.
