PURPOSE: To produce a titled material which has excellent resistance to deposition current interruptability, dielectric strength, etc. by infiltrating a copper material in a porous base material consisting of a ferritic stainless steel, Mo and W having a specific compsn. ratio in a non-oxidizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: A powder mixture consisting of 29W70wt% ferritic stainless steel and 1W10wt% Mo+W (where at least one thereof is 0.5%) is heated and held to and at about 600W1,000°C lower than the m.p. of the above-mentioned ferritic stainless steel to diffuse and bond the metals in the above-mentioned powder mixture to each other, thereby forming a porous base material. The remaining compsn. amt. of the copper material is placed on said porous base material in the form of block or powder in a non-oxidizing atmosphere and is heated to the temp. lower than the m.p. of the ferritic stainless steel and higher than the m.p. of the copper to infiltrate the copper material in the porous base material. The electrode material for a vacuum interrupter consisting of the composite metal and having excellent performance is thus obtd.
