PURPOSE: To keep contacting relations between each magnetic gap and a magnetic medium well and to make a device small-sized by joining the other faces of the first and the second magnetic shield plates to each other to constitute the composite magnetic head device.
CONSTITUTION: Faces 4R and 4P to be brought into contact with the magnetic medium are formed on head element parts 1R and 1P, which are attached onto the first and the second shield plates SH1 and SH2 respectively, in special modes. The face 4R to be brought into contact with the magnetic medium of one magnetic head element part 1R is polished with an arc whose center is the position shifted inward from the extension in the depth direction of a magnetic gap GR of the head element part. The face 4R to be brought into contact with the magnetic medium of the other reproducing head element part 1P is formed into an arc, for example, a cylindrical surface whose center is the position shifted by a length -lS from said extension in the direction opposite to that of the recording head element part 1R.
