PURPOSE: To obtain the title fiber having excellent high melting point, high strength and low thermal conductivity and useful for composite material, etc., by spinning a spinning dope containing a specific zirconia sol to afford a precursor of zirconia-based fiber and then subjecting the precursor to heat treatment and calcining.
CONSTITUTION: A spinning dope containing a zirconia sol (preferably having 30-50wt.% concentration as ZrO2) obtained by hydrolyzing a reaction product of zirconylammonium carbonate and a chelating agent such as oxyphenols or aminoalcohols is prepared and spun to afford a zirconia-based fiber precursor and the precursor is subjected to heat treatment at 500°C for 2-3hr and calcined at 1000-1500°C for 1-2hr to provide the objective fiber. Furthermore, a molar ratio of the chelating agent/zirconia is preferably 0.5/1 to 2/1.
