PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium enhanced in lubricity and durability by applying a higher fatty acid on the surface of a thin ferromagnetic metal of Co or Co fine crystal alloy oxidized on the surface.
CONSTITUTION: The fine crystals 2 of Co or Co-Ni alloy or the like is formed on a nonmagnetic base 1 in the presence of a gas by the slant vapor deposition method or the like, and the oxide 3 of them is thinly formed on the crystals 2 to form a magnetic film 3. It is coated with an org. solvent soln. of a higher fatty acid to form a lubricant layer 4. After the coating, it is heat treated to combine it strongly with the oxide 3 on the fine crystals 2 and to enhance its lubricity to a higher degree. As a result, the obtained magnetic recording medium is freed of rise of noise under all the environmental conditions, and drop of output due to blocking, etc., and superior in durability.
