To provide a simple and economical process for preparing a toner composition having excellent degree of pigment dispersion and narrow GSD.
As the toner preparing process, at first, (I) a cationic emulsion resin latex containing an olefin non-polar monomer, a cationic olefin monomer, a cationic free radical initiator and a chain transfer agent in a water based mixture containing a nonionic surfactant and a cationic surfactant is prepared and the mixture is heated at 60-95°C, (II) the cationic latex is adjusted to pH 10-14, then, (III) a dispersion containing a coloring agent, an anionic surfactant and a charge controlling agent is prepared, next, (IV) the coloring agent dispersion is dispersed with the latex (II) by impressing a shearing force and heated at a temp. lower than the Tg of the resin to form an electrostatically combined aggregate of toner size and the size of the toner aggregate is stabilized by adding a cationic surfactant. After that, (V) the electrostatically combined toner size aggregate is heated at a temp. higher than the Tg of the resin to form a coagulated toner particle, which is filtered, cleaned and dried to obtain the toner.
