To improve the lightness of a transflective liquid crystal device in a transmission mode.
The transflective liquid crystal display has pixels arrayed in a matrix while nematic liquid crystal is interposed between one member formed by forming a light reflecting film with light transmission holes on one main surface of a transparent substrate and laminating a transparent electrode and an alignment film in order on the light reflecting film and the other member formed by laminating a transparent electrode and an alignment film in order on a transparent substrate. On the main surface of the former transparent substrate, a λ/4 plate and a polarizing plate are arranged in order, and between the former main surface and light reflecting film, a λ/4 birefringent layer is provided at a position corresponding to the light reflecting film.
