To obtain a transformed plant retaining normal morphological character, capable of reducing the use of chemical insecticides, ensuring insect pests to be surely controlled, and useful as cotton, soybean, or the like by including a specific chimeric gene.
This transformed plant is such one that each of its cells contains (A) a promoter region derived from a gene spontaneously expressed in the plant cells such as nopaline synthesis promoter region and (B) a DNA encoding a crystalline protein produced by Bacillus thuriengensis, or a DNA fragment afforded by cleavage of a DNA with sequential homology thereto; wherein the fragment B encodes a polypeptide toxin with a molecular weight of 60-80 kD such as part of a protein having an amino acid sequence of the formula and contains a chimeric gene capable of providing a polypeptide toxin in cells in such amounts as to enable insects to be controlled as a result of the intracellular expression of the fragment B, and it is preferable that the fragment B lies adjacent to a selectable or identifiable DNA marker fragment.
