Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled transparent polymer having excellent cutting and polishing processability, and suitable as a material for hard contact lens, by using t-butyl methacrylate, a saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid vinyl ester, and a polyfunctional monomer at specific ratios.

CONSTITUTION: A monomer mixture composed of (A) 30W94.5wt%, pref. 50W 90wt% of t-butyl methacrylate, (B) 5W69.5wt% of a saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid vinyl ester (pref, higher fatty acid ester such as vinyl laurate, vinyl stearate, etc.), and (C) 0.5W20wt% of a polyfunctional monomer (e.g. ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), is added, e.g. with a free radical generator such as benzoyl peroxide, and thermally polymerized to obtain the objective polymer.

EFFECT: The hardness, heat resistance, and solvent resistance are also high.
