In the travel control apparatus 1, an ECU 2 as a mean speed calculation means, obtains the speeds of a plurality of front traveling vehicles traveling ahead of an own vehicle through a communication part 4 and obtains the mean speed of the obtained speeds. Also, the ECU 2 as a control speed determination means, determines the control speed of the own vehicle according to the calculated mean speed. Then, the ECU 2 transmits a prescribed signal to a traveling driving part 6 or a braking part 7 to make the own vehicle perform constant speed traveling at the determined control speed. The own vehicle N therefore performs the constant speed traveling at the control speed corresponding to the mean speed of the plurality of front traveling vehicles without performing acceleration/deceleration traveling following up only the preceding vehicle. Thus, it is possible to suppress acceleration/deceleration, and to achieve an improvement in fuel economy or the promotion of freeing up of congestion.
