PURPOSE: To prevent the wear of descalers and effectively remove scale, by supplying a prescribed quantity of water just in front of each descaler to make a water layer on hot steel.
CONSTITUTION: Water nozzles 1, 3 are provided just in front of the descalers 2, 4 along the width of the hot steel 7 so that the nozzles are oriented at an angle of about 30° to the surface of the steel. At least 1.0 m3 of water per 1 m of width of the steel 7 is supplied thereto through the nozzles. An air nozzle 5 is provided near behind the rear descaler 4 so that the water having flowed on the steel through the descaler 4 is blown back to the descaler 4. As a result, a flaw sensor 6 is not hindered by the water from checking the surface of the steel 7. Because the water layer is produced on the hot steel, the descaling of the steel is accelerated. The surface of the hot steel is thus cleaned.
