To treat ophthalmic infections by topically administering azithromycin to eyes of animals including human to be treated.

The medicine is directly applied in the form of a composition comprising azithromycin and a topical carrier acceptable as a medicine at a daily single dose (about 5 mg) for 5 day to eyes of animals including human to be treated. The medicine can be applied to treatment of chronic follicular conjunctivitis due to trachoma, namely Chlamydia trachomatis. Azithromycin is preferably included in an amount of 0.1-2.5 wt.% based on the composition. The composition is inert and nonallergic and does not contain preservatives and contains preferably 55 wt.% white veseline, 42.5 wt.% mineral oil, 2 wt.% lanolin and 0.5 wt.% azithromycin dihydride.
