To provide a single stage wet oxidation method for treating waste water which contains organic chemical species containing or not containing heteroatoms and strongly acidic anion, for example, sulfate ion and phosphate ions or strongly basic cation, for example, sodium, potassium or calcium ions and contains ammonium ions and/or nitrate ions in some cases in addition to the added ammonium ions and/or nitrate ions.
This method removes substantially all of the COD and nitrogen by heat treating the same at around the critical temperature of water and converting the same to water, carbon dioxide or carbonic acid chemical species, gaseous nitrogen and a small amount of nitrous oxide. The key for the success of this method is to balance all of the reducing chemical species with an equivalent amount of the oxidizing chemical species and to maintain the balance of all of the strongly acidic anions with all of the strongly basic cations. The waste water contains at least acetic acid ions of at 0.06 of the mole of the nitrate ions in the wet oxidation process step.
