Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem wherein the significance of low level of circulatory VEGF because mutations of VEGF HRE or coding sequence are not confirmed in a patient of ALS.SOLUTION: This invention relates to use of angiogenin or a fragment or variant thereof for treating diseases or conditions characterized by neuronal injury or death, or axonal degeneration, especially neurodegenerative disease such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This invention also describes a plurality of mutations in the human angiogenin gene which are associated with a neurodegenerative disease phenotype, and particularly an ALS phenotype. This invention further describes a method for assessing whether or not an individual is afflicted with, or genetically predisposed to develop, a disease or condition characterized by neuronal injury or death or axonal degeneration.
