To provide a two-photon absorption material which is an organic material inducing an optical function via two-photon absorption with high sensitivity, detecting a change of the optical function with detection light of an identical wavelength, and having a large cross sectional area of the two-photon absorption, and to provide an optical function imparting method, an optical function detecting method, an optical recording and reproducing method, an optical recording material, and a three-dimensional optical recording medium, respectively using the two-photon absorption material.
The two-photon absorption material has a first linear absorption band in the vicinity of the maximum two-photon absorption wavelength and a second linear absorption band in a region of a wavelength longer than that of the first linear absorption band, wherein optical characteristics of the second linear absorption band is changed by the two-photon absorption. A mode in which a refractive index (n) of the second linear absorption band at the two-photon absorption excitation wavelength is 1.65 or more and its extinction coefficient (k) is 0.05 or less, a mode in which the two-photon absorption material has a chemical structural part comprising conjugated bonds mutually linked in a circle, and so on are preferable.
