PURPOSE: To greatly suppress the number of standard patterns to be compared in type character recognition and speed up the recognizing process, and to greatly suppressing recognition errors corresponding to the reduction of the standard patterns to be compared.
CONSTITUTION: A photoelectric conversion part 103 digitizes type characters printed on a document 101 into binary patterns, which are stored in a quantized pattern memory 104. A character segmentation part 105 segments the patterns into the type characters and a character height and width detection part 106 detects the height and width. In a reference value memory 108, reference height and width values are stored while classified by fonts or by character forms when the same font has different character forms, and standard patterns which are grouped into the classifications of those reference values are stored in a standard pattern memory 109. A character height and width selection part 107 selects which standard pattern the height of an input type character corresponds to and a recognition part 110 performs collation which is limited to the selected standard pattern.
