The illumination device includes: a rod integrator 122 as a uniformizing unit to substantially uniformize the intensity distribution of beams; a first reflective polarizing plate 121 which is disposed at one end face of the rod integrator 122 and which transmits polarized light in a first oscillation direction and reflects polarized light in a second oscillation direction approximately perpendicular to the first oscillation direction; and a second reflective polarizing plate 125 which is disposed at the other end face of the rod integrator 122 different from the end face where the first reflective polarizing plate 121 is disposed, and which transmits polarized light in the first oscillation direction and reflects polarized light in the second oscillation direction.
