Abstract:

PURPOSE: To expand the dynamic range and to attain a broad band by forming an interferrometer in which two optical fibers are used for an optical path and providing at least one of a relative phase difference and an angular difference of polarized planes corresponding to two propagated lights to the side face of the optical fibers so as to modulate.
CONSTITUTION: The intensity of light emitted from a light source 1 is divided into two by a photocoupler 2-1, and the two branched lights are made incident onto optical fibers 4-1, 4-2 and propagated through them via an optical fiber connection section 3-1. An external modulator 6 applies any of a pressure change, temperature change and magnetic field change depending on a transmission signal to an optional point of the optical fiber 4-2 to change a propagation optical path length and photoelectric effect thereby providing at least one of a relative phase difference and an angular difference of polarized planes between the both optical fibers. The lights emitted from the optical fibers 4-1, 4-2 are coupled again by a photocoupler 2-2 and made incident onto photo detectors 5-1, 5-2. A modulation signal appears by changing the relative phase difference and the angular difference of polarized planes of the optical fibers 4-1, 4-2.
