Abstract:

PURPOSE: To improve the gel strength and water retention of hydrogels by using a specified compd. as a crosslinker in the preparation of hydrogels.

CONSTITUTION: Phosphonic acid dichloride is reacted with a glycide in the presence of a base to obtain a compd. represented by formula I (wherein R represents an optionally substd. alkyl, alkenyl, or aryl). The compd. represented by formula I, wherein R pref. represents a 1-6C alkyl, a 3-8C cycloalkyl, a group of formula II (wherein R1 to R2 represent each H or a 1-4C alkyl), or a group of formula III (wherein R3 represents H, a halogen or a 1-4C alkyl), is used as a crosslinker in the preparation of a water-swellable hydrogel based on a (co)polymerized hydrophilic monomer or based on a naturally occurring hydrophilic polymer.
