To eliminate the usage of a ball bearing at the portion rotatably supporting a shift drum by equalizing the load generated during upshifting operation and the load generated during downshifting operation so that the sense of discomfort of a driver is eliminated, in a variable speed gear for an internal combustion engine in which change gear operation is performed by rotating a star plate fixed to the shift drum by rotating a change spindle and a stopper roller is pressed against and engaged with a recess on the outer periphery of the star plate.
The rotational center of the stopper roller is positioned on a straight line connecting the rotational center of the change spindle and the rotational center of the shift drum, and pressurizing force is applied to the stopper roller in the direction of the rotational center of the shift drum.
